These spherical bottles were prevalent in the mid-17th century and were mouth-blown rather than made in moulds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy this time, English bottles were made using coal fuel, which generated higher temperatures than earlier wood-burning furnaces. This produced stronger bottles with thicker sides, which could be used for storage as well as simply as serving vessels.
